Real Wedding | Ryan & Krystyl’s Ka’anapali Estate Wedding

“Live long and prosper”. If you recognize the origin of this saying, you just might have a few things in common with our newlyweds, Ryan and Krystyl. Their estate wedding was an intimate gathering of family and friends, hosted outdoors on the Ka’anapali Coffee Farm. Settled high above sea level along the West Maui mountains, they exchanged vows with the sight of Ka’anapali’s gorgeous coastline glistening below. With rows of green coffee plants stretching acres around the estate, the combination view of land and sea rivals any oceanfront venue in our book.

Have a peek at this couples’ special day, photographed by the talented Maui Maka Photography.

Where our islands lack in land mass, we make up in talent. Our ‘Style Guide’ posts feature the people and brands influencing our industry for the better in the fields of beauty, bridal fashion, and event decor.

Today we’re chatting with Maui makeup artist, Ry-n Shimabuku, sharing a little insight into things you should consider when planning your bridal look. Within his 10 years in the beauty industry, R-yn has worked not only with our brides but also celebrities such as Pamela Anderson, Amber Rose, and Daphne Guinness. His commercial client portfolio includes Nike and The Grand Wailea Resort and Spa, with published work in Destination I Do, Modern Luxury Hawaii, and Maui No Ka Oi magazine. Having coordinated numerous weddings Ry-n has been involved with, we’re happy to feature his thoughts and answers to 10 questions we think every bride should know…

1. How did you come into being a MUA?
The beauty industry always interested me and I got immediately hooked after dabbling in it. It’s what I love to do and it never really feels like work.

2. Are there any differences in everyday makeup vs. bridal makeup?
With bridal makeup, you need to make sure it is applied properly to translate into your photos and video. However, don’t loose yourself in your makeup look! You can still look like you, but just camera ready.

3. What are some ways for brides to find their look?
You should consider the style of your wedding, color palette and also browse for pictures of makeup styles you like. Then you and your makeup artist can customize the best look for you.

4. Trends vs. classic looks, your thoughts?
Trends can be great if that’s your everyday style, but classic is just that. Classic! It’s timeless, chic and will alway look great.

5. How do you know when someone is the right MUA for you? Is there something you should ask to see if its the right fit?
Do your research and look through their website or portfolio. their work should catch your eye and get you excited!

6. What are some common mistakes brides can make when it comes to their wedding makeup?
Kim Kardashian and Angelina Jolie are beautiful women, but you should look like you! Be the most stunning version of yourself on your big day!

7. What are the benefits of doing a trial appointment before your big day?
A trial allows me to get to know you better and which products work best for you. You get the peace of mind that you will be flawless on your wedding day, and not thinking about that updo or lipstick that could have been.

8. What are 3 must have products for touch-ups during the wedding?
My bridal touch up kits always include a light powder or blotting sheets for shine, your lip color and qtips or tissue to fight off tears of joy.

9. For our Destination Brides, what is one product you recommend for their time visiting Maui? { ie: chapstick, foundation with sunscreen, etc. }
Sunscreen! Everyday! Sunburn and tan lines are no ones best friend on your wedding day.

10. What has been your favorite project/client of your career?
I do all sorts of jobs like commercial shoots, print work, music videos and pageants, which are so much fun. But weddings are different and special because it’s such a big event and a very personal one. I’m honored when brides, and sometimes grooms, choose me to make them look their best on such an important day.

Real Wedding | Lincoln & Heather’s Island Villa Wedding

melissapadillaReal Weddings1 Comment

Maui is home for us, though with so much beauty in every island, how could we not love them all. Today we’re featuring the villa wedding of one of our beautiful couples Lincoln and Heather, at the luxurious oceanfront Hale Ohana on Oahu’s North Shore. An intimate gathering of family and friends surrounded them as they exchanged vows and leis in front of the classically scenic Pacific ocean.

Tamiz Photography did a lovely job at capturing the way Lincoln and Heather stare at each other. One minute with them and it is easy to see how deep their love runs. Floral arrangements by Passion Roots Florals of pale pinks and white roses paired with cream hydrangeas adorned the reception table alongside classic lace, crisp silverware and glassware. A disposable camera was also provided at each table setting as a fun gesture for every guest. As their photographs show, Lincoln and Heather are a wonderfully romantic couple. They both love the rain and requested that their first dance be in the villa pool. It was details like this that made this wedding so special.

A fun note we learned while working with Lincoln and Heather is that they’re both professional bagpipe players. Yes, really!

The simple elegance of this wedding is attributed to its many thoughtful details. The gorgeous lace cuffs seen below were made by the bride herself, and the bride’s custom heels by designer Freya Rose.
